Church Council As with many businesses and agencies, College Place possesses a vast organizational structure that often seems to function behind the scenes, though that’s not intentional. Members and visitors easily get to know and see the paid staff — the pastor and ministry leaders — but an expansive network of volunteers lies beneath. Those volunteers are coordinated within committees and teams whose chairmen sit on the Church Council.
College Place’s Church Council meets at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month. Chairmen from more than 18 committees or teams and the church staff members report on what’s happening and about to happen in the lives of their groups and the church.
Committees include volunteer bodies that oversee the actual functioning of the church such as staff-parish relations, finance, trustees and the building committee. The council also comprises teams such as global missions, local missions, United Methodist Men/Women, communications, TLC, etc.
The primary tasks of the Church Council are:
1. To carry out the business of the charge conference, which is the basic governing body of each United Methodist church. The conference is composed of all church council members and must meet at least once a year to direct the work of the church, give general oversight to the council, review and evaluate the mission and ministry of the church, and accomplish other directives.
2. To help the congregation articulate its vision.
3. To oversee planning of the congregation.
4. To develop systems that insure people are received into fellowship, guided and encouraged in their spiritual transformation and growth, and supported as they live out their lives as Christian disciples.
Most of the committees and teams accept and indeed actively solicit volunteers, however some members, depending on the committee, must be appointed. College Place needs EVERYONE’s support and service. Please consider joining a committee or team today. Visit any of the committee pages on the submenu for this page (which we’re currently building and adding onto) or click on Groups and Teams under Get Connected and look at the Team pages (watch for more coming soon).
